Hurshell Thomas married Rebecca Anne Castellaw Thomas on August 21, 1969.  They had four children Angela Gale Thomas Morales, Aimee Lyn Thomas Lang, Kaitlyn Rene Thomas and one son, Joel Anthony Thomas.

He served in the United States Army from 1970 to 1972.
