Mel led an interesting, active life.  He was very involved in community theater.  I tagged along out of friendship. If Mel were working the sound system, he would have me pulling the curtains.  He had an adventurous spirit, but it was tempered by a serious side.  We were working publicity for Lysistrata.  Mel got around to reading Aristophanes' play and was rather scandalized by it.  He wondered if we should be involved.

Indeed, Mel was very protective.  When I told him of considering a mutual acquaintance as an escort to the Govenor's Ball in Topeka,  Mel said "May I ask why?"  I thought the fellow amusing.  Mel thought him a fribble and volunteered himself.  We had a great time

In my senior yearbook, Mel wrote to remember our adventures and those who shared in them.  In very small letters, he added "and me".   Remembering Mel, makes more poignant his absence in our class reunion, There's comfort, though, in knowing that he will be part of the ultimate reunion and will most likely play a part in its production.
